  • Insulation for wooden stand

Hello everyone, I have purchased an oven and i intend to build it in next year as we may be moving house, however for now i intend to make a temporary home for the oven out of 4x4(10cm) Treated fence posts, followed by paving slabs and then the oven, i imagine i need some sort of insualtion between the oven and the concrete slabs to stop them getting to hot near the timber, could anyone suggest a highly cost effective way as for now want to keep cost down to a minimum. I was considering a layer of bricks around the edge of the slabs and then filling the space with sand slabs on top then the oven but im not sure sand is even an insulator, could i just go timber-slab-ceramic fibre blanket/board-oven? if so can anybody recommend any products easily avalaiable in the UK?

    Thanks

Welcome ktd. You could use either ceramic board or a 100mm slab of vermicrete (vermiculite/portland). Either will work and the vermicrete could be poured easily enough.

You need to remember that the vermicrete is only insulation and has little structural strength so it will need to be adequately supported.

My frame is wood and steel with a 3/4" sheet of plywood on top. 5" of ceramic board on the plywood, and then the oven. Since you asked for cost effective then the vermicrete or perlcrete is going to be much cheaper than ceramic board. I went for the ceramic board for ease of use and better insulating properties.

          G'day
The ceramic board could be cost effective if you take with you when you move and reuse it

Also if i was to go for ceramic fibre could I just use a couple of layers of the blanket rather than board?

                Re: Insulation for wooden stand

Fireproof cement board doesn't imply insulating. If it's like the moisture resistant tile backer cement board we have here then I would say it doesn't have the proper insulating properties you would want for brick oven use. Ceramic blanket is very compressible so not a good choice for building on top of. A couple layers squashed under the brick would lose much of it's insulating value. You would essentially end up with a thin ceramic board...

Dave's comment about being able to reuse the ceramic board later is a good point.

Thanks tony, I have sourced calcium silicate board just down the road at sig technical insulation it's 50mm thick for 20 pounds per square metre no minimum purchase, somebody tell me this can do the job as seems a bargain.

The CaSi board should be fine. It's almost the same as ceramic (AlSi) board as far as insulation properties.
