Hello Everyone, I am making a brick oven and this is my first time doing this and so I have a question about insulating.

So I have my fire brick for the firebox and then I have my red brick for decorative purposes. My question, what can I place in between the fire brick and the red brick? I know that soft firebrick is good for this but I was talking to a friend and he said that I can place sand. Would this be a good alternative? What does the community think?

    Re: Insulation

For your oven to function properly, hopefully you have installed proper insulation under and around your dome (you call it a firebox). Insulation around your entryway and flue is recommended, but not mandatory. Having followed these rules, most builders simply mortar their decorative bricks to the entryway bricks.

Hopefully you're not looking to clad your dome with common reds and fill the void with sand, for sand has no insulating properties.
