I plan to build a Pompeii oven from scratch, and I have a question about the vent. In looking at numerous pictures and videos on line of the various construction methods, I notice that some ovens are vented to the inner arch, and some are vented in the outer arch. Which is the way to go to build and hold the best heat? Does it matter? Thanks

You do not want the vent \chimney in the dome. So unless I am miss understanding your question you want it in the outer arch. You want to be able to have a door seal aginst the dome had hold the heat in. If the vent is behind that it will let all the heat out.

Hopefully this is just a semantics problem. Like Randy says, if you want to retain heat, the vent/chimney belongs between the inner and outer arches. If you check out the pompeii plans provided by our hosts, or pretty much any oven built/shown on this forum you will find the vent between the arches. My build thread
