  • Calcium Silicate comparisons/suggestions

    Good Afternoon!

We are pouring the structural concrete hearth today and I am thinking ahead... I was attempting to price Foamglas, Thermo-12 Gold, the FB CFB and all types of ceramic fiber boards. When asking a sales guy about Thermo-12 Gold, he suggested Thermafiber® K-FAC® 19 as a comparison. (It's about $7 a sq ft) I was hoping that someone who understands the insulation on a much higher level can tell me if the Thermafiber® K-FAC® 19 is a good product to use on top of the Foamglas.

I am in Southeast Virginia, does anyone have a lead to a product or a better suggestion? I still have to do some researching and problem solving. I was all about the vermiculite, my husband is all about the quick and easy.

As always, thanks to all the experts who make these projects attainable to regular folks like me!

I like quick and easy when it doesnt affect the overall outcome of what your trying to accomplish. I personally am not about shortcuts that weaken or change the quality of the project. if the quick and easy makes sense and is equal or better then I say go with it. Im doing foamglas on the bottom with thermal 12 gold. Others have used this and had great results. I was quoted $5.49 for thermal 12 gold from distribution International. The insulation alternative you were given actually imo doesn't sound to much different but there seems to be something that burns off at a certain degree and I wonder if that will stay in the oven floor bricks or not...would like to know if its safe to put in the oven that will be used for food...i would contact the manufacture direct. also check their MSDS sheets for the product.

The Thermalfiber has a good K value (thermal conductivity) but is too low in compressive strength, according to spec sheet it has a compressive strength of 4800 psf or 33.3 psi you should have at least 75 psi, Thermal Gold 12 has 90, I think Forno Bravo's board is 0.5 Mpa or about 72 psi.

Besides all the technical specs that UtahBeehiver pointed out. I didnt like that it said the first time heating it up you had to do it at 15 degrees an hour and also there is a binder layer that burns off at 450 degrees. I'd probably stay clear of this material regardless even if it was strong enough to hold the weight of the oven.

Thanks for the info! We are gonna keep looking for foamglas and thermo-12 gold locally. We talked to a great guy today who had both products at good prices, but it was $220 shipping! Yikes!

I’m close. Can’t get anyone to return my calls/emails (they requested I send an email for a quote)... I sent another one last night after reading these responses. Thanks!

They are probably your best choice. I too had a little trouble getting answers and call backs myself
