  • Home Brew Mortar for Chimney Bricks?

Should I use the refractory mortar/home brew mix for the chimney bricks on the arches and vent? Should they be the usual 3/8" or very narrow like refractory brick laying?

The general rule of thumb is to use it wherever you can expect high heat or flames. My answer to your question would be yes. You can always switch back (just skip the fireclay) when you get done the arches, vent, etc., if you like, It's really a judgement call. Same w/the joints.

Thank you kindly! Is there any problem using the homebrew wi the fire clay for regular brick laying? Is it not as durable with the fireclay?

Nope. It's perfectly fine. It's just not needed, so you could save it if you wanted.
