Laying the Oven Floor

Hi all,
I had cut all bricks for the oven floor and I'm ready to position them on top of the ceramic FB. I read that a 50/50 mix of fine sand and fire clay needs to be used for leveling. I'm not certain if I need to spread a uniform layer of the mixture on top of the ceramic FB and lay the bricks or should I just use it on per brick bases, in case some of the bricks appear to be uneven with the rest of the floor.
I'd appreciate it a great deal if someone clarified this for me.
