For making home brew mortar , is the fire clay what you would get from a pottery supply , or something else ?

You can certainly get clay powder from a pottery supply shop, almost any type of clay powder will work. (except bentonite clay) but also brick and masonry supply shops should carry it. Just make sure its not fired clay dust, aka grog - that would act more like a sand-type aggregate, without the extra workability and stickyness the claydust adds to homebrew mortar.if it's worth doing, it's worth doing to the best of your ability!
