Hello . I’ve almost finished casting my dome from refractory castable mortar over a sand mold . I’m wondering should I remove the sand and begin curing before adding blanket and chicken wire

BlackpoollBaker I'm sure others will reply, but I want to post in case you're anxious to get going. I'm no casting expert, but after reading hundreds of posts from david s, you're going to want to remove the sand once your casting is cured enough to support itself (24-48 hrs). Then fill any voids so the new material has a better chance of adhering. Then, wrap it well in plastic for a week to continue the wet curing process.

Also, you'll want to make sure you have the dome insulated before you begin your small drying fires. Insulation helps to control the temperature differential through the thickness of the casting so thermal induced stress cracking is minimized.
