  • Clay tiles for thermal base?

Hi, as a complete novice and in the contemplation stage of building a pizza/bread oven I have so many questions.
First question is to do with the thermal base of the oven.
I have read lots of advice on the forum about perlcrete vs board but was wondering if flat clay roofing/Rosemary tiles would be as effective. There is a plentiful source of used tiles here.
My thoughts would be to have layers of these on top of a concrete slab then sand/fireclay bedding for floor bricks.
Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated,
    Dave

I would first download the free eplans from Forno Bravo and review the plans, the plans are a little dated but a good baseline.

Don't skimp on oven insulation, lack of insulation or wet insulation is one of the main reasons of poor oven performance, ideally a min 2" CaSi board under floor and 2" of ceramic blanket on the dome is the best but if budget is an issue, 4" 5 to 1 p/vcrete under floor and 4" of 8 to 10 to 1 p/vcrete over dome ( more labor involved but less expensive than high tech CaSi/ceramic blanket).

Fired ceramic clays, ie tiles, do not typically have good insulating value for insulation under the oven floor.

There is also a sticky under the Newbie Section called Treasure archives which shows some very well documented builds.

First time on a forum so not up to date with etiquette.

Thanks for that info. I’ll have a look at the download and previous posts.

Oh well! Back to the drawing board for my insulated picnic Sporran.
