  • Where to find fruit tree wood in Bay Area, CA.

This is a little off topic, but I thought I would enlist the superior brain trust of this forum. I am on the search for applewood, madrone, almond, hardwood firewood for use in my WFO. Ideally, It would be nice to source the wood within a reasonable distance from The Bay Area, penninsula area, south of San Francisco and north of San Jose. Any helpful tips are appreciated. Thanks!

You live by the largest agricultural area on the planet. If you look in the Brentwood area, I know you can find walnut, almond and peach. Another option on wood could be grape - I haven't tried that, but I think it would work well. I recall seeing apple it in the Sac area. Just check the classifieds, I'm sure it can all be found.

    Good luck,

Ah, A little google search turned up a wood merchant who has Almond and Walnut. I may get a 1/4 cord to start and see how that goes. Never heard of grape vines, but I have heard of using old wine barrells for a nice wine flavoring.

Wine barrels are usually made from oak - that's all over the place. There was a place in Reno that was selling grape - it sounded good to me but to stack the stuff would be insane. It grows straight for about an inch.

Just look in your backyard, I lived in San Jose for 39 years and the Santa Cruz mountains are full of manzinita, madrone, live oak, old walnut orchards, prune trees, cherry trees, central valley has lots of fruit trees on the way to Sac. You are surrounded by resources in the Bay Area. Just be sure your getting it from a legal source.
