  • How many firebricks to use in a 42" WFO?

Hi all, I am new to the site but have been planning my WFO for about 6 months now in Lyndhurst in SE Melbourne, Australia.

It is all coming together and I have started building my base which will include a the oven, a built in barbecue and a herb garden.

My question is simply how many fire bricks will I need to build just the dome of a 42" oven (100cm)? Obviously most will be cut in half, aside from the soldier course.

I am assuming around 130 should suffice. Is this right?

I am planning on using 300mm x 300mm fire tiles for the oven floor which is easy to work out, but the dome numbers are harder to fathom!

Thanks in advance guys, any help would be appreciated.

    Cheers,

    BEN

130 sounds about right for the dome. (floor and entryway not included).

I used about 250 for the dome, floor and entry. I used the method where you fill the gaps with mortar. If you cut each brick to shape, you will use more.

Re: How many firebricks to use in a 42" WFO?

Thank you both for your prompt replies.

I think I will buy 150 bricks to start with and hopefully that should be enough for the dome and entry.

As mentioned, I will not be using standard firebricks for the oven floor, rather 12" x 12" x 3" refractory fire tiles purely to keep gaps down and make it easier to level the floor.

        Cheers guys.

the lager floor tiles are alot better if you are going to cook on the stone and not use trays, Im tray man but slide the pizza off onto the stone half way through, the tiles have a greater surface to cook on

I used 270-280 fire brick for everything on my 42". I also had a larger entry than most (but love it) that took up a few more. I did a lot of cutting and tapering. Oh ya, I probably wasted about 15 bricks with such bad cuts they were useless except for learning what not to do which has its merits. I have 3 left over. Good luck on your 42". -Dino

Thank you for your replies everyone.

I have decided to purchase 170 standard fire bricks for the dome and 16 12"x12" fire tiles for the floors. I think this should be sufficient.

My brick base is almost done - almost ready to pour the foundation slab!!

Jason - I'll let you know once I get underway so you can come over for a peek.

                  Cheers

So Ben, I am curious how many bricks you ended up using on your dome and entry. Please fill me in.
