    Re: My progress

"I think it'll be gorgeous looking inside with all those thin chains of bricks! Between that and the size of the oven, you are in for a seriously time consuming build!"

Thanks splatgirl and your right it's going to be a very tedious process. Good thing the labor is very cheap here and they love doing this stuff cause it's something they would never see here in the Philippines.

I'm going to have to make the oven a little smaller because of the new configuration but I think it will still be 55-57". Thanks for your advice John

      Re: My progress

We made pretty good progress this week. Poured two more inches of perlite, laid out and trimmed two layers of hearth brick, mortored second layer of hearth brick, started the entrance arch/chimminy opening, ran out of fire brick. It's fiesta time here so all the workers went home yesterday.

          Re: My progress

          Hi Everyone,
We finally got back to work on the WFO...sigh!!! Haven't been able to work on it because, we poured the concrete roof over the WFO and surrounding area. WFO was covered with scaffolding for weeks. Not to mention the three typhoons that came through the Philippines. The WFO is situated in a kitchen/bar area inside an open cabana adjacent to the infinity pool. I will post a rendering on my next enrty. Anyway, we made pretty good progress this week with installing the soldier course, finishing the archway entry and getting about 2/3rds of the dome completed. The arche/dome trnasition is proving to be a real challenge. I think we have it under control. You tell me...haha. Thanks in advance for any input.... John

                Thanks Mark,
I will be applying 4 inches of perlcrete to the entire dome for insulation. By the way, am attaching the rendering of the complex.

The WFO is not shown in the drawing but will be in back of the horseshoe in the kitchen.

Your absolutely correct Splatgirl. I thought we would finish it this week but not quite. Of course my bricks are less than half the width your typical fire brick, but I have used over 550 bricks so far and it looks like at least another 150 more. Keep you posted. Hopefully, we can finish before we leave for California December 15. Keep you posted.

                          Re: My progress

Am about 3/4th finished with the dome and leaving for the states tomorrow for three weeks. Thought I would show these clips I used from someones post here. Can't remember who's post it was but it's brilliant. Once the courses got past a certain point, gravity took over and there was no way they were going to hold just by the morter surface tension. Luckily, I saw the post just before I was at that point. Slip these clips on just after you have it tamped into place and works like a charm, and I had the wire laying around. Can't tell you the size of wire but much thicker than a clothes hanger wire. You need the stiffness. Thanks for the great tip. John

I saw that thread too lwood,, it's a great idea and looks like you really needed it... you could also fill your dome with sand if you had too,,, But it lools like your doing ok...

                            Enjoy your vacation,,

                            Cheers

You guy's didn't tell me what a tedious process this is. Have over 700 brick so far and when will this ever end?...haha When I get back, I will have my little Filipino mason to crawl inside the dome to finish it. That dome is starting to close in on me. One wrong move and I'm knocking off bricks faster than I can put them up. Can't wait to fire it up.....after the New Year i guess. Happy Holidays everyone!!!

Hooray!!!!! The bricks are finally finished. With over a thousand brick and a lot of blood sweat and tears but also a lot of fun. Learned a lot. Unfortunately I was using my new Christmas camera and the resolution settings were too high to post here. For those of you on facebook here is a link => Login | Facebook
