Use a refractory castable in the 1400c range, and include approx. 5% by weight s/s needles for strength.

Which material do you think is best for a mobile pizza oven?
Ferrocement with addition of fire clay or Refractory Concrete.
      Thanks for all the imput.

Hi Mark/Carol, I've put a fair bit of information on this site about making a castable dome. If you're interested please go to :

      http://www.fornobravo.com/forum/f6/m...oven-9230.html

We have so far built nine ovens and have five ovens going strong using this method.

      Cheers

Re: Monolithic dome vs pre-cast facetted dome.

Thanks everyone for the replies and information. I will probably go with a monolithic dome cast in place. Once the weather breaks and dsries out a little I hope to get a start excavating the base etc.

Hi Carol, is this the sort of thing you're thinking of?

Re: Monolithic dome vs pre-cast facetted dome.

Using the cut down barrel is not a smart move, after a few firings it will have flakey rusty crud falling ono the pizzas.

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply. I was thinking of something other than Willeys project but I really like what he has come up with. My plan is to hand form my one piece oven over a sand form and I would also like to build a oven like Willey's. I have enjoyed your photo's and appreciate how easy your instructions are to follow.
              Thanks for all the advice.

Re: Monolithic dome vs pre-cast facetted dome.

I went to one of the events they were at on Mercer Island Wa .
The floor is refractory bricks .
I think the walls and dome are the same , to achive a 4 in thick surface .
Then insulation blanket , wire mesh and more concrete to get the smooth surface.
What interested me was how well the dome was insulated , they stacked about 10 pizza boxes on top of the oven.
