Cement has been around for a little over 7000 years that we know of. The Egyptians used it, the Romans used it, and it was in use in mortar continuously for at least 3000 years. Portland cement was in the late 1800's but natural cements have been around since man discovered fire.

Looks like Mrs Shakespears's oven was constructed with a Sailor course and a teardrop dome . It's doomed to fail...in the next 500 years. I wonder what ratio of sand to cement they used?

Oh, and another one I saw wasn't ancient...it's a grill made out of a Carlton beer keg. Will most certainly do that in the future. Pics also to follow.

Hi Folks

I travelled to the UK a few years back and visited all the local attractions. Although I had been there before (as Mum is from Newcastle) I was ten at the time so the memory was a bit sketchy.

A couple of the stops were Anne Hathaways cottage (Shakespeares wife) and Hampton Court.

I had special interest in the kitchens and took some good photos.

I'll post them when I get off the train tonight. It's a great insight into how things were done in the 1500's.

Better late than never!
