  • Silver Birch for WFO?

    Hi all,

I have been offered some silver birch from my usual log supplier. In the past this has been mixed in with alder wood which I reserved for actual cooking; I used the silver birch just for firing, where possible. But now he doesn't have any alder.

I would like to know if there are any known safety issues with silver birch. Does anyone else on here use it?

    Thanks,

    Rich

According to Wikipedia it should be safe.

"Silver birch wood can make excellent timber for carving kitchen utensils such as wooden spoons and spatulas: its very mild, sweet flavour does not contaminate food, and it has an attractive pale colour."

That's actually one of the better woods to burn. Pretty much all quality firewood in Finland are made of it. And it's what I mainly use in my wfo.

They also make Xylitol from the sap of silver birch. And it's good for making furniture as it's hard and pretty dense wood with beautiful color to it.
