  • My "paranoid crack" thread

    [IMG][/IMG]Well,
I'm about one week and many fires in to my curing process of my fire brick oven and this morning I let a fire get away from me while I was distracted . My poor oven thermometer was pegged at its limit of 600 on the floor. But the dome still had accumulated soot. I had a couple hairline cracks on the dome prior and post a have sone more. No smoke exiting, just hoping to hear that there isn't a critical mass of cracks or just some reasurring words!! Im going to try to figure out posting pics

edit: seems impossible to upload from my terrible phone, will update when I get near some wifi!

edit: Maybe this works? l]imgur: the simple image sharer

    Re: My "paranoid crack" thread

    G'day
Its impossible to tell oven from oven how much moisture is present. Probably the top of the dome is dryer than the lower parts of the oven. Leave it sit for a day or so, then the water will migrate to the dryer parts. Just go back to lower temperature and slow down. Keep the same size fire and as the oven dries the temp will go up itself, you don't have to build bigger fires every time.
Problem with the phones theses days is the picture quality is too good . A rough way to downgrade the quality so it is exceptable to attach is to attach it to a text and send it to yourself.

Continue with the drying fires....normal expansion cracking per your description.

        Yep. Those are cracks alright.

Don't worry about it. There are two types of ovens: those with cracks, and those with owners who lie about them not having cracks.

Can't you guys leave this poor guy's thread alone?

Take it elsewhere. Preferably off the forum.

                Re: My "paranoid crack" thread

It's amazing the trouble a paranoid crack can cause😀 I am also over the cause or the rights or wrongs, if people wish to continue the should do it privately as the discussion has not been in the general interest of most or in the spirit of the forum

                  Re: My "paranoid crack" thread

Meanwhile, back in the Sunshine State Toomulla would like his thread back. I am voting ONE for Toomulla and reckon that since his 'paranoid crack' is a totally different thing to some of the other rubbish posted on his thread. I am with him. Take your garbage out, this is a forum about building and using WFO's not a p1ssing competition.
                  Cheers ......... Steve

                    Re: My "paranoid crack" thread

and here's me thinking I had gotten the whole thing wrong... have done my first successful batch of pizza following the whole cautious curing process of tea light candles thru to tinder fires etc and suddenly had noticed some cracks... still seems very solid and have left it for the remainder of the week.
A question tho... I will still be doing a final plaster over the dome... will this require a second curing process ?

                      Re: My "paranoid crack" thread

It depends what you mean by "curing". I like to cure the outer rendered shell by wrapping it in cling wrap to hold the moisture into that layer for a week, to enhance its strength. Regards firing to drive out the moisture which seems to be popularly referred to on this forum as "curing", no you should be good to go, but it would still be wise to fire up and bake something before going straight to pizza temps.

thanks.. the cling wrap idea makes sense and the slower lower heat baking makes sense too...

Will let you know how it goes...
