Here and in Houston a lot of sellers will sell you a cord of wood that is 16" deep by 4' x 8', not 4' deep. This is really a face cord , 1/3 of a full cord. I've heard a full cord will fill two large pickup beds.

Not being familiar with those cords/chords, I plucked at a Google site and got a quick run-down here:

Just to add fuel to the fire , here there's what's called a "bush cord." Typically, it would measure around 5'x5'x10', stacked, but the point is it's a more casual measurement of quite a bit more wood. It's the kind of thing you can buy at a "bush lot" where the trees are actually felled and split.

Thanks, CJim, life wasn't meant to be easy...

So the trees I have felled 20-odd years ago and those that I felled two-three years ago and am now cutting up and splitting will be stacked as bush cords on our bush block, a.k.a. Clod 9!

George, with no pricing or opp from Les yet, I will end up buying a half cord of lesser priced wood. Maybe walnut, its less expensive. Once I get a feel for the oven, and I use up the half cord, I will evaluate pricing again, unless a great deal comes up sooner. As for Craig's list, every source within this region equates to that same approximate price. I must find a source that will be long-term reliable.

I'm serious about checking with the BLM about a wood cutting permit. Having seen your part of the world first hand, I can't imagine that there's not a great opportunity to go out and get your own in the future. Why not save thousands of dollars over the next 40 years or so.

My friend I was going to talk to is in Florida - he should be back next week. I'll let you know what the options are. In the mean time - there is a place at Mound House that sells hard wood - I don't think it's at the $400 dollar hit you are being quoted.

Hmm,
Supply and demand at work. Perhaps charcoal briquettes? Travelling a hundred miles to get wood used to be an option. With gas at $3.40/gallon, $400 a chord may be the best you can do now. Perhaps Northwest, into Southern Oregon?

The first lot of wood I got was about twice as expensive as what I've got now... thing is the second time you've had more time to look around.

So Acoma, if I were you, what with patience not being one of my strongest points, I'd probably end up getting a bit of the high priced wood so you can start your curing fires, and in the meantime shop around for a regular supplier/plan.

Robert - here are a few. Still looks pretty pricey for hardwood. If you need wood just for your curing at this time, I would think you could pretty much burn anything. Go to Lowes and snatch a few pallets.

Les, I have scrap fence board (non stained), and scrap construction board too. Enough to do the fires. I found a guy on Craigs list in the Sac area that had a cord+ of free wood, looks like Oak. Gone in a day. He said he may have more of this soon. He mentioned he would email me as well. If this happens you and I could get it (with your truck?) and split the wood, if your interested. If not, I will find a way.

I am finding wood in the low to mid 200's for Seasoned Oak around Loomis, Auburn areas. At least my research is getting me refined with cost and supplier choices..

Free is good - I'm interested. I drove down to the bay area yesterday and picked up a load of walnut, it was free as well (other than the price of gas).
