I live in So Cal. I have my own truck and chainsaw. Is there any provision you have heard of to cut oak or other hard woods on public land, possibly with a low fee or permit? (State or national park)
Seems cheap but a cord of nicely split oak in my area runs at least $ 500, $ 700 for nice pizza size split wood. Could be any hard wood.

Check with the Forest Service web site for wood permits. Not all area allow wood gathering and mostly only allow dead fall. It is something like 15 or 20 bucks a cord. Not sure what district you are in but the Forest Service wed site will tell you. Pretty sure spark arrestors on chainsaws are required.

      Thanks Beehiver!
I will try that next time. I ended up buying some Almond that was split but on the chunky side and I purchased a Electric splitter from Harbor Freight for $ 300 to get it split down to cooking size.
I hope it will be worth the investment.

That will work, probably even better.
