  • Look what fell off the back of a lorry today!!!

A friend of mine woke up this morning to the sound of a chainsaw... but instead of some maniac running around with a mask on, it turned out to be a tree surgeon at work in her neighbour's garden. So having a tree of her own that needs felling she went out to talk to him.

Turns out the expensive bit is getting rid of the wood afterwards, "...unless you can think of anyone who could use it" he says.
Free wood, free delivery... hey, I'm on to a good thing here!

Now all I need to do is go out and buy an axe.

Excellent score on the wood, Frances!!

Instead of an axe I would suggest either a wedge and a sledge hammer or perhaps a splitting maul.

An axe and maul is great exercise. Good for the heart and for stress! Great score.

If you have to go out and buy a sledge and wedges, do your back a favor and spring for one of those hand cranked wood splitters:

              Frances,
take the easy way and invest in a hydraulic log splitter.
It is easy to use and remains easy as you lose that spare energy that you you have at the momenmt.
It is not everlasting and a splitter certainly make the task easy (and quick).

Frances, I haven't been on for a while and I don't see any more recent posts from you - too busy splitting wood??

I agree with the hydraulic splitter recommendation.

After a few months of swinging a sledge on a wedge, I just couldn't see myself doing it for the next 30 years. Doc says I have arthritis in my shoulder (geez, I'm only 43!). My gas powered splitter was one of my best purchases.

That's no fun. What is that doing to your golf game?

Thankfully, (to the dismay of my parents) I never caught the golf bug. I'd rather be building stuff (arbors, WFO's, cabinets, etc)

The shoulder isn't too bad; controllable with an anti-inflammatory, so all's well.
So... I get to buy cool toys like a hydraulic splitter, snow blower, etc.

Good one, I'll have to try that once I get fed up with splitting wood... at the moment I'm still too fascinated with it all.

You whack an enormous piece of wood with this enormous splitter thing (looks like an axe to me - I found it in the cellar, belonged to the former house owners and its nearly as big as I am) - and hey presto, the wood falls in two parts. Weird. Cool.

I'm sure the novelty will wear off though...

Yes Francis, the straight bits fall into halves with an axe or a log splitter, but try some of those other pieces with branch forks in them - a different story! If you will nibble around the edges with a splitter (or axe) you will reduce them to your required size, but with a lot more effort. A hydraulic splitter sometimes won't even touch them but they do make the job a lot easier (but come at a cost).

Either that or you are going to develop some really big muscles.
