  • Construction of Chimney question

I need to have a chimney that goes up above the level of an adjoining building. I'm actually thinking of building my oven into the side of that building, a former garage, that is concrete block construction. I want to use a masonry chimney, and have a question. A chimney consists of a tile liner, say 8 by 8 inch interior size, and some sort of masonry exterior, most easily those hollow concrete squares. My question is: I know the tiles are set together with a minimum amount of refractory mortar, but how is the interior of the chimney attached to the masonry surround? Is it filled with mortar? Regular or refractory? Is the weight of ten feet of masonry chimney going to crush my oven entry arch?

I figure it's better to ask a dumb question than make a dumb mistake. Any thoughts?
