Re: Considering build of Pompeii oven

    Neill,

Thanks for that will read the info now. I figure if I can have light in the oven then that woudl be better than a miners light on my head. I know my friend would have a field day with me wearing a miners hat while cooking.

    Christo,

I like your idea of mouting the light into the brickwork of the arch helps to protect the wire from heat. Did you wrap the wire in Insulation ?

I will be looking at using 12V Lights rather than the 240V option and am thinking of incasing it in a glass enclosure made from the same glass used inside ovens doors.

I embedded some halogen lights in the decorative arched opening to my oven. The approach is very similar to Niels approach (he did his before me) - the difference is in the way the lights are mounted. Still considering going the 12VDC approach but for now lamps are 120VAC protected by GFI circuit.

So far - I have a light grey soot coating on the lamps - but no appreciable layer, The angle, combined with their being pairs lights up the inside of the oven very well. Their location is far from the inside of the oven and temps remain relatively low at the arch area. I intend to mortar a small piece of brick and wire cover to act as a guard against someone touching the lamp...

    Good luck and think safety!!

    Hi Ikhan 42,
it has been some time since I put some information onto this forum but check out my illumination at:

Post photos of your oven in-progress and when you are done, along with photos of pizza, roasts, bread and more.

Depending on your chimney size, you might consider the downlights. I am wrapped in their efficiency and they really light up the whole floor, making it very easy to work without truing to hold a wobbling light where you need it.

Guys is there any lights available that can be installed in the dome of the oven that can withstand the heat that these ovens are capable of putting out.

I was thinking about having a couple of wood tops (say 24" wide) that could slide under the oven in the foundation area when not in use. Then when you were using the oven they could attach to the sides of the oven foundation and have fold-out legs on the other ends. This way they are out of site when the oven isn't being used and no need to make a giant cooking area on both side of the oven.

What you think could this be a good way.

I just plan to build a small "counter top" with steel studs and concrete board next to my oven. I found a 24" x 6 ft piece of granite for $100 which I plan to use for the actual counter/pizza prep. I might run some electric to it (maybe a small refrig if the wife isn't looking) but no sink.

    Good luck.

Everyone follows their own path. I'm sure it will turn out well. We'll be looking forward to pics and updates.

Re: Considering build of Pompeii oven

I am considering a 42" x 17" oven with an elliptical shape. Since I will mainly be cooking pizzas, but also plan to do some other foods, I figure the mid-range height should work well. The elliptical shape should theoretically optimize the reflective heat from the fire to the pizzas.

The attached drawings show the proposed shape with and without tapering the bricks. One drawing has no bricks tapered, resulting in outer gaps up to 15/16" wide. The other drawing follows RC's (and others?) technique of tapering just the bottom of some of the bricks, with all outer gaps 3/8" wide. Since tapering the bottoms of some of the bricks doesn't seem to be too difficult, I think that that is the way I'll go.

Any feedback on the proposed design is appreciated.

    Jet,
I think the framed in oven is the recommended finish in the NE, though there's no reason that you can't do an adobe. You just need to be really careful about making sure its waterproof.

Check out Christo's oven/island. He did a great job on it - from your description, it sounds similar to what you're thinking of building.

Good one Dave! You made me laugh, then I went to bed as ordered.

    Frances,
Glad I could help. Kiss your kids. You could never explain this blather to them.

Thanks for the input and the laughs!

I would like to have some counter space available, but I don't want to make the project overly complicated. I'm thinking either small wings or making space available to the sides of the oven vent.

We have a patio outside the back door and I'm leaning toward having the oven off of the patio. It would be to the side a little, so that it doesn't block the view of the yard. I think the existing lights on the house are sufficient. I did see someone's oven in the forum (can't remember who) who had a light inside the decorative oven vent arch that was pretty cool!

I still haven't figured out whether I'll do a dome shape or frame and roof. Do you think one is better than the other for use in the New England climate?

It's good to hear that people to use their oven in the cold weather. I just snowblowed the patio yesterday to keep it clear for grilling (pizzas of course)!

You guys just crack me up!

Talk about prescription-free pick-me-ups... "Feeling down? Need a good laugh? Then go visit the FB Forum!"

The difficult bit is explaining to the kids what made me laugh so much...
