  • SOUTHERN COLORADO ~33" BUILD

    FB FOLKS...

I'm finally putting some skin in the game versus living vicariously through all of these fantastic builds.
The wealth of knowledge on this forum is impressive to say the least. I've spent so much time trying to recreate these assemblies through pictures and posts I feel a kinship with you all!! Much appreciative to those that have responded to questions about design/set up/ and building materials!!

I am attempting a 33" build, in order to maximize the space that I have. I had about a 4'x4' hearth planned but that morphed into what it is now due to finding Forno Bravo after the fact. My wife's grandmother passed and we were dismantling an outdoor oven and thought... Hey, FireBrick!! Cool, let's build an oven...?

This was before the covid insanity and subsequent ramp up of DIY yard projects. After a plumbing crisis, yard remodel, half basement remodel and a few years...I'm back to attempt this build.

In the stupor of starting just to start I screwed up the pcrete ratio, let it set and thought about it for a few days, then chucked it, asked forgiveness and then advice.

UtahBeehiver talked me off the ledge and this is where I stand:

Enroute to aquire another 1" of InBoard to go along with 2 existing inches I relized that CalSi board and InsBoard are not the same thing. UT's asked me to confirm that the board I was using had a minimum of 70PSI compressibility. 1" InsBoard 2300 does not, it has a PSI strength of 27. The Refractory Company that I've been getting supplies from made me a deal on some SkamoCeramic S-1100E WR.

Would it suffice to use 2" of InsBoard covered by 1" of Skamol S-1100E?

I have weep holes drilled, mosaic tile in place, was initially planning on pCrete but wanted to opt for better performance with out the wait on drying time.
