  • Big Cans of San Marzano's at Costco

Big, as in the industrial sized cans. Has anyone tried them? Are they even real?
Because ever since I listened to Lynn Rosetto-Caspers Splendid Table episode about San Marzanos, I'm skeptical that ANY we get here are the real deal.
OTOH, does it matter if they're not real but still tasty?

Check the fine print on the can. See if there is an Italian government seal.

I'm also a fan of the "If they taste good, use them" club!

If no DOP seal on the can, they aren't true SM's, but I'm also a taste good fan!

So, reporting back....they're knock-offs to be sure, but I'm sort of loving them. I portioned the big can into sandwich bag size portions and stuck them in the freezer. I've been pulling a bag out to thaw, adding oregano and salt and zizzing for just a second or two with the immersion blender. They taste great, and for like $4 a huge can, they'll be on my Costco must buy list from now on.

We have a NEW word... Zizzing!

I like these guys. No DOP, but good.

                  Hey Splatgirl,

when you say big can, are these the restaurant size #10 cans - weigh in about six pounds each?

yes, big restaurant size cans. in comparison to the mindblowingly delicious sauce I made from my homegrown heirloom tomatoes, it's not anything special, but they are decent and the price is right.
