Best way is to push the embers off to side of back when ready , brush the ash left towards fire as much as possible. At the end , take damp rag and clean oven floor......... Best way !

When your ready to cook, take the small round peel and smack the floor a few times where you will be cooking , ash gets airborn and out the flue it goes. Plus the oven is so hot it burns off....

I tried this method a couple of times, but in my oven the ash went everywhere and then settled back on the floor. A blow pipe is far more effective for my set up.

Slapping the peel against the floor works great in my oven. I will try the blowpipe method, though .

I am only half way through building my first oven and I had thought about making a tray that I can slide into the oven and build my fire on it. Move it to where ever I want the fire to be and then slide it out and dump the ash when done. Does anybody else do this or am I missing something about wood fire oven cooking by doing this? Would be nice and clean.

We're going primitive, back in time! A little ash, some soot, burn your pinkie, strain your back from lifting wood. A pan for your fire so that your floor doesn't get dirty?? Give me a break, go sit in your rocker and play bingo!

Ash is sterile and tasteless, plus very little sticks to the pizza anyway.

You need to summon up some of the primitive soul and get into the spirit of searing game with fire. The smell of something burning (the hairs on the back of your hand for example) and the neat sound of a peel on the brick floor of the oven.

Save the fancy stuff for the turbocharged number in the kitchen and enjoy life on the simple side.

From the one time i used my oven and tools i soon discovered the following. Move and brush coal/ash with a wire brush, bristle brush catches on fire, a blow pipe/ copper pipe works real well and runnig a damp mop ever so slightly cleans it well.

I agree, a small damp mop work wonders. I've always thought a blow pipe of some sort will work as well in some instances of gently pushing ashes out of the way.
