Re: Karangi Dude's 48inch Oven
Yesterday I mortared in the Landing and Entry Arch.
Sorry about the yellow lights but we use them to stop attracting insects and bugs to the white light. Near the end I turned on a flood light to cut a couple of bricks and a Rhino Beatle flew in he was about 2" long I helped him on his way and turned of the flood light, I should have taken a pic of him to show those who have never seen one they are harmless but do frighten the crap out of you the first time you see one. The last pic is a dry run of how the enclosure might look.

Re: Karangi Dude's 48inch Oven
Hi All,
Wow it has been a while but I have started again with the build. My palett of Old Style Bricks arrived along with the Polished Granite Landing that I had on order. I have been down to Wangaratta in Victoria to visit my Daughter and to check out my Son's first Home, of course he had lots of jobs for me to do but that's another story. On my return trip I had to go through Sydney so I picked up some more Fire Bricks as I will be building a Parrilla further down the track so I saved on the freight cost.
When I arrived back at work I got the phone call to say the bricks had arrived and then a call from the Stone Polisher to say he had the granite ready. I must admit I was pretty excited to see how they would look as I have had this design in my head for some time.
It has been really hot and humid here in Coffs Harbour way to hot to be working on the Dome under the iron roof so I decided to start the enclosure. After cutting the Enty Arch bricks I noticed how much offcuts there were from the dome etc. Set out the Arch and the Landing ready to motar in.

Re: Karangi Dude's 48inch Oven
7th course finshed. The build will now slow down, as of Today I am back at work. I have included the latest pics, the flue vent and chimney, the view looking in from the door arch, transition, the silly old builder having a beer on the job, it has been hot of late so a cold beer has been most rewarding and the dome taking shapeLast edited by Gulf; 05-12-2017, 08:03 AM.

Re: Karangi Dude's 48inch Oven
Another course finished and 2 more thermo couplings added set in a brick in the seventh chain.
One thermo coupling set 10mm from the inside and one set 10mm from the outside of the brick. I drilled two small holes in the brick one 10mm in and one 105mm in and then set the thermo couplings in high temp cement. This should give readings that show the varaince 10mm inside the surface of the wall and 10mm from the outside of the dome wall, the same thing that I did with the centre floor brick. I hope to log how long it will take to reach saturation in the floor as well as the walls, also which type of woods perfom the best, other info such as holding temperature, cooling down times with and without the door. I will gather Info over a period of time as I expect the oven will take a long time to fully cure and reach optimum performance. I will post my findings later, but for now I have to complete the build.

You and I started about the same time, but you are light years ahead now. You will be using your oven a couple weeks before I finish, so, I'll be watchingLast edited by Gulf; 05-12-2017, 08:02 AM.

Re: Karangi Dude's 48inch Oven
Thanks Bruno,
I bought the supplies from Field Furnace Refractories in Wetherill Park PH.9729 1799. Bruno I have researched WFO's for about 3 years and found that no one had the plan that suited me so I used a lot of peoples ideas and of course a lot of my own.
The angle is the cut of the first brick next to the entry have a look at my post 6/1/11 there is no formular.
I hope this helps Regards DougLast edited by Gulf; 05-12-2017, 08:01 AM.

Re: Karangi Dude's 48inch Oven
Hi Doug,
I've been reading your thread with great interest. Your oven looks to be coming along beautifully...great work !!.
Firstly, I was wondering where you got your supplies from and secondly, how do you know at what angles to make the inside cuts of the arch where the chains of 1/2 bricks connect to?

Re: Karangi Dude's 48inch Oven
Thanks Guys,
Yesterday I got the first 3 courses layed after a bit of fiddling about with my dome guage.
The weather here has been really wet, you are forever covering things up from the rain. One thing I have really noticed is how these fire bricks soak up the water I have to soak them in water and make the motar pretty wet and they still seem to grab pretty quick. I have to make sure to set them in position and tap them down straight away as you can't move them once they soak up the water. This high temp motar is very good to work with it is nice and creamy a bit expensive at $36 for a 25kg bag. The people who manufacture it (they manufacture fire bricks, fire insulation bricks, motar etc for the furnace industry) told me that it can be used up to 60mm thick without any problems, I won't be using it any more than 20 -25 mm. They also supply fire bricks to a lot of people that have built successful WFO's.

Doug,
Fine-looking build! Anxious to see how the transition proceeds. Must be nice to have an assistant!
