Hi All,

Like many others, I had considered building a WFO for a while and have now finally made a start. The base has been completed and I am now researching what next. Here are a few photos of my progress.

Thanks to everyone for sharing their knowledge on this forum allowing so many people to benefit.

Hi Paul,

I had the reo/mesh left over from house renovations so thought I'd put it to good use. The slab is 200mm with mesh top and bottom. The soil is reactive so I thought it was worthwhile doing.

Congratulations Dave, its a great start. What style of oven are you building? What size?

Hi Dave and welcome aboard.
Great to find another Adelaidian on board.
I guess that you are from the north eastern suburbs with that reactive soil. Your foundation should ride out all that they can (and will) offer.
Keep the pics coming as the members like to see member's progress.

Hi cobblerdave,

I've been a little (or maybe a lot) slack lately and have been dragging my heels.

I still have to source a supplier for the materials and unsure where in SA I can get them all in one hit. I can get the whole lot shipped from Sydney but the freight/logistics may make that difficult.

If anyone has used a local supplier then let me know so I can get this baby moving.

Hi Dave

I noticed your using a lock block - besa block? I too am looking at using this type of block to speed things up, as I will be filling the blocks with concrete anyway. How did you find them? The result looks great.

I checked with Littlehampton when I built my Pompeii and they couldn't/wouldn't tell me their composition.
They are also around $5 each although their seconds are more reasonably priced if they have them
They sell far more of their 4" solid fired clay pavers to oven builders and that is the way I would go next time as they are fired at over twice the temp (1200˚C) that you are ever likely to get your oven.
I suggest you contact Thermal Ceramics at 10-14 Toogood Avenue, BEVERLEY PARK, SA, 3305. They have most of what you need.
