  • Need help with the mortar mix

Hi all - Ive just started building the dome on my oven and I need help with the mortar mix.
I have purchased A600 Chinese Cement from Field Furnace Refractories (wetherall park sydney).
Is this a premix or do need to add sand etc.?
    What are the ratios?
I have also read alot about adding fire clay, is this necessary in this cement?
    Thanks
    Heath

      Hi Heath and welcome aboard.
I personally wouldn't use any of these products and stick with the poor man's mortar for several reasons. It is easy to make, cheap and seems to out perform all these other refractory products.

      Cheers,

      Neill

I agree! I've built a few and especially those ovens with a lot of reinforced thermal mass on top, things are not going to move too far, only as far as a quality fire brick will allow! I know with the method I use, very little of the mortar actually sees flame and has no way of getting into the oven.

Vermiculite. Various ratios, for different strengths.

                  Vermiculite in the mortar??
Won't this make it way too coarse?
