  • Tile adhesive?

Any tips on what tile adhesive to use on the oven bench area. I will be using small 100x100x10 terracotta tiles on the work top and brick tiles/pavers (25mm thick) on the side of suspended slab.
    Thanks.. Oscar

Thin set with acrylic additive will work well. Also use the acrylic additive in the grout. It adds some water resistance and flexibility to the thin set and mortar.

The acrylic additive here comes in liquid form and is available in quarts and gallons.

I use it to set tile in my swimming pool and it is under water all summer then frozen to -25 F in the winter. It holds up.

          Thanks everyone for your help.

I now have something to work with thinset, acrylic additive, grout, coloring for the grout and a trowel.

Off to Bunnings soon so I'll see what they have.

            Hey Oscar,
I got some flexible tile glue from bunnings as well as flex grout. It worked a treat. The glue needs to be mixed with water and has a stone look, like plaster with pebbles before you mix it, but it works well. And a quick note on the grout, use darker colours rather than white...easier to clean when working with food. The only other thing I can say is seal the grout when its dry so food and liquard doesnt stain it. Good Luck

I ended up getting this stuff

Davco Ceramacrete 20kg - Bunnings Warehouse

I saw the flexible stuff and was leaning towards it but once I spoke to someone at Bunnings I went the cheaper option. The oven bench top is rigid with no movement so the flexible stuff wasn't needed. I asked about additives but was told it wasn't needed and all I need to do is seal the tiles and grout once laid. I have concrete sealer so I'll use that to seal everything once finished.
The adhesive I got says it's suitable for indoors/outdoors and to only avoid using it on areas that will be submerged under water so it sounds fine.

              Thanks everyone.

                Gudday Oscar
I have used the davco before.... depends on the colour of you tile of course but it can be used as a grout. Yep my laundry grouted with it... 2 years now and the pizza oven. So it's not on the instructions ...quess what davco make grout as well which is a lot more expensive than the adhesive.....and the same thing I recon

                  Re: Tile adhesive?

Thanks Dave that's good to know. I will have a fair bit of adhesive left over so knowing I can use it as grout is good news.
I have some black cement coloring so I'll add some to the adhesive and see if it works being cement based I'm thinking it should. If It does then I make the grout black not sure if it'll look good orange terracotta tiles with black grout.
Red and black works but orange and black not sure I'll soon find out.

Black and orange are terrific. Black will intensify whatever colour it is against because of the contrast. The effect will be reflective of the fire. Do it!
