Yes it has a hole that goes through to the blanket . Hot air/steam rises and it vents any moisture otherwise I recon if it wasn't there any moisture would condense when you oven cooled. I have no way of measuring how well it works other than I have seen little wisps of steam rising from it . If the oven is damp and that happens from time to time you can feel dampness in the hole when taking the cap off recon it's probably just the heat from the sun on the render surface taking the moisture to the top of the dome

Re: Suggestions for a paint/waterproofer for the dome?
Hi Dave,
A question regarding your vent. (pizza oven vent that is!!). I have a layer of vermiculite/cement over the insulating blanket, did you sit the fitting on top of this or did you create a hole down to the blanket?
I assume that being at the top of the dome, any moisture will find its way up the inside of the render layer and out the vent as this would be the easiest pathway for any steam/moisture. Is this assumption correct?

Craig

Colin I am also looking at hebel under the dome. How many lintels did you end up with?
The bits I worry the most about are the chimney and the waterproofing. Especially after reading the thread about the exploding floor.

Vent Mark 11 which is basically a screwed end fitting for a 25 mm pipe. Mark one was open to the air and when it rained the ants headed to higher ground and would have loved to live in my oven. They didnt like the heat when it finally arrived next day after firing the oven.
Ive attached a brass chain to this so it doesnt get lost, and paint will have to wait till it stops raining. Remember I have ceramic and rockwool insulation and this works well. I don't know if it would work the same with say Pearlcrete?

See above post for those interested in finish alternatives if living in Australia.

Hi Rosemary
Check My Build Out Below, The Photos Show How I Supported The Hearth.
Also I Am Using a Granite Render to finish the oven.
I have been Researching this for some time to find something that resembled Granite. I found this product, it is close enough to what I was looking for. Similar to Pebel Crete but I think more appropriate for ovens [Pebble Crete is manufactured to be submersed].
I have attached some photos that i placed in my build below. There are more [photo's] over at my build. Apparently they have other options and colouring as well.Last edited by oasiscdm; 03-18-2013, 04:34 AM.

Re: Suggestions for a paint/waterproofer for the dome?
Because the outer shell of an igloo oven gets pretty dirty from occasional soot falling from the chimney cap, weather and bird and flying fox poo, I find it easier to just repaint the thing every 12 months or so.

Re: Suggestions for a paint/waterproofer for the dome?
Hi Guys
FB is just a wealth of oven information and this is a topic i have wanted to see for a while from those without constructions aroudn their ovens. I'm no where near this stage but thought i would ask anyway especailly since Pebble crete has been mentioned in this thread thanks for that SpottedFrog.
I wish to finish my dome with a 5 mm layer [ over the render layer ], so that it looks like Granite Rock. This will then tie into the rest of the garden. I have been researching this now for at least 2 months and haven't got very far. The Granite is a light grey with blacks flecks through it. Has anybody tried anything like this or come across a pebblecrete along these lines.

You might be on to something there. That swimming pool stuff should be very strong. Pebblecrete I think it's called. Just beware that it will also trap moisture beneath it because it's waterproof so you must eliminate the moisture from the oven before applying it.

Re: Suggestions for a paint/waterproofer for the dome?
Just wondering if anyone has used swimming pool render, it seems to be flexible comes in cools colour and is waterproof? Oh yes it can take temps of at least 40deg C. As is used in spas.

Thanks Davids and Neil 2 I have come to the same conclusion you just can't keep moisture out of an oven in extreme conditions. The bricks and mortar naturally just take in moisture from the air. I have fitted a vent 4 in vent cap to top of the dome in a effort to allow this moisture an escape route. I will have to fill in a largish crack between the dome and chimney with paintable silastic then give Oscars flexable tile mortar a go.( thanks Oscar)
Recon it will need a coat of paint it looks a little "stark"

Re: Suggestions for a paint/waterproofer for the dome?
I agree Neil a vent is a good idea to eliminate moisture. I have also got a vent on my oven, but it is incorporated in the surrounding support for the bottom of the flue pipe.Although you can waterproof the outside, after a couple of months of deluge, the porous refractory and insulation are bound to get damp, even from the 100% humidity in the air.
