  • Newbi saying hi from Sydney

    Hey all,

Brendan here from Sydney, (Epping area of Sydney)

just sending out a hello and a congrats on such an awesome forum.

I am slowly getting my info and plans in place to build a pompeii style oven.
    About 32" similar to OscarA ( http://www.fornobravo.com/forum/f8/m...gun-15347.html )

I am currently in a townhouse with no room for an outdoor oven, but soon to move to a new suburb, house and a backyard suitable for a great entertaining area.

i am after help with suppliers in sydney of fire bricks, mortar, reo, and all the other litlle things needed to complete a master oven.

Thanks all in advance for advice and help.

    Cheers

    Hi Brendan, and welcome aboard.
It is important to build your oven to best suit your and your circumstances and desires. Don't go too small if you want to cater for larger groups and family. I have a 40" Pompeii which allows me to cook up to 5 pizzas simultaneously with a fire still in the oven, albeit at the back and one side. There are members with much smaller ovens but still cook numerous meals but take a little longer.
Download your plans, read, ask questions and as the say, 'just do it'!

    Cheers.

        Hi Brendan,

Like anything, the more you learn, the more you want to learn.. The process for me has been fantastic, with excellent info and feedback from forum users. I said to my wife the other day, "I'm looking forward to building the next oven to improve on what I have learnt."
I haven't even finished the first oven.!!!!!!!

        Cheers

Hey mate, in Sydney you can get all your supplies from Field Furnace Refactory. They have a wealth of knowledge and are Wood Oven Specialists. I bought all my mortar, fire blankets etc from there:

                    hey mate,

yeah after a longer than expected selling of my home,
and longer than expected buying of a new home (with garden area to suit a large oven) i am this weekend quite certain to buy a house that has area large enough to build an oven. so in the coming months i will be looking madly for help, plans, products, ...and more help in the construction of my first pizza oven.

so here we go boys and girls its on. well sort of, the dream is getting closer!!

still unsure on build size, prob go a 32-36 inch. pretty standard type insulation etc like most other quality builds on this site. price aint the real issue, as we want it to last many years. i am a big believer in quality over quantity.

                    cheers

                      Hi Brendan,

My advice would be to err in favour of the biggest size you can make. Mine is 1m internal (40 in) and when I first saw it, i thought it looked way too big inside. However, having used it for both pizza's and roasts etc over the past few months, I can say that I think it is just big enough.

When cooking pizza, nearly half of the floor space is taken up by the coals and fire. And on those occasions when I'm cooking some roast chicken or ribs in 1 pan, some mixed veges in another, and potatoes in a third, I'm glad that I can fit all three in together.

Even if you don't cook for large groups very often, I don't think it would use that much extra wood to heat when cooking pizza for a small family.

As my Dad always told me.."Better to have it, and not need it, than to need it, and not have it"....

Just my 2 cents worth.....good luck with the new house and enjoy the build.
                      Regards,

                      Bruno

Re: Newbi saying hi from Sydney

                        little update,
finally bought a property in Baulkham Hills, Sydney, just north of Parramatta. So when it comes to buying bricks and mortar type stuff i'll let you guys know, i'm constantly roaming ebay for any second hand fire bricks etc.
need to organise the backyard as it has to accommodate bbq area, grass, deck, tomato crop, herbs, playground, chickens and finally PIZZA oven.
cant wait to start the build in the coming months.
any help in finding bricks and mortar in sydney would be much appreciated.
as well as free fire wood, the house has two fire places!! have chainsaw so can cut onsite. i know you can get a permit to cut logs etc in state forest, but generally have to travel to lithgow etc. anything closer would be great. aussie hardwood preferred.

                        cheers
