Wood to burn

Been giving my son a bit of help with a problem gum tree on his new house property in the Adelaide hills. After a couple of days of bad weather and a couple of tree monkeys, it finally came down with probably 20 tons of wood BUT the 3 big logs will be milled to build staircase, decking and outdoor furniture (once dried). However there is plenty of wood which will not go to waste and will end up in my Pompeii.

Wow Neill,

That was certainly a bigun. Look forward to seeing the cured milled wood in a future furniture.

Glad it didnt fall on anyone. Ouch!!!

Had a busy week-end slabbing and planking the 3 logs, what a load of great boards, and a wide variety of plank sizes and one log slabbed.
This green timber is unbelievably heavy and as the day got longer, my strength diminished considerably.
We cut plenty of 10 x 2", 10 x 5" and 4" slabs (which we had to cut in halves to manually handle or the 6m long ones were towed off with vehicles and chains.
Also, as a result there is a huge amount of sawdust (with a 6.1mm kerf from the 10" Lucas portable mill) and a huge amount of offcuts, several years supply for me.
The staircase step treads were shrink wrapped to slow down the moisture loss as will the slabs which will take a couple of years to dry.
These mobile sawmills are incredible, my son and I could not keep up with my cousin who was operating his new toy. The step treads (10" x 5" x 48") for example weighed in at around 50-60kg At the end of the day, even the offcuts and waste wood was too heavy to lift but had to be cut down into "more manageable sizes"! Guss I'm showing my age eh!
