  • acrylic render on top of cement render

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere but I am planning to render my dome oven with a standard sand/cement/builders clay mix. Then I will fire the oven a few times to dry it out before applying a waterproof coloured acrylic render as a final coat.

    Is that OK?

    Cheers,

    Tony

    Tony,
A litle more information about your dome's construction and some pics will help for a good response. But, the main thing that concerns me, is that you did not mention insulation

      Thanks for your response.

I'm sorry I should have been more explicit. The oven is a 39" dome built with 4" fire bricks. There is 2" calcium silicate board underneath the cooking floor and the dome will be covered with 2" of ceramic fibre insulation blanket, chicken wire, then 1.5" of render.

      Pics will follow.

      Cheers,

      Tony

Tony - There is no problem with applying an acrylic layer over the cement render provided you allow the cement render to cure and dry before applying it. I used Dulux Acratex and a year later it is fine.

I do acknowledge Gulf's concerns about insulation over the dome before the render coat though. I put mine over a ceramic fibre, chickenwire, vermicrete insulation layer.

        Good luck with it.
        Cheers ......... Steve

          Hi Steve,
Thanks for the tip on Acratex - I'll look it up. Just went through your build pics. Great job. Congratulations!

Did you add any lime to your cement render mix?

          Cheers,

          Tony

            Tony,

I did add a little lime to the render, not much though, about half of what I used in the grog.
            Cheers ......... Steve

I see that the thread is old, but i have had a lot of problems with Dulux Acratex and for this reason i want to share my experience with the community. Please take a look at the video i made:
