Fire Brick Costs

Hi Guys

I am new to the forum and am trying to work out some rough costings before i commit at this point. I am only a uni student so i don't have the most amount of money and trying to work out if i should wait and save more.
After getting a quote from my local brick supplier in Mackay Qld I am getting a price of $5 a brick for a medium fire brick. Is this the expected cost ?? and where are the best supplies and prices from people around Australia.

That seems to be the going rate for the bricks from Dinmore if they have to travel. You might check Gumtree for second hand firebricks and you may find some locally if you have a brickworks that has closed down and the like.

You might want to go for the new bricks for the hearth but there are some options for the dome bricks. I found some tapers that had been laying around for ages, they were unused and I got them for .75c. I also found some used firebricks from the old Maryborough Brick Co for $1 ea. Sadly this source is now exhausted but if you keep your nose to the ground and ask around a bit it is surprising what you can come up with.

That is about the best price you will find for new. I used a taper which ment I only had to do side cuts for close fitted joints but the cost goes up by another 20%

I have been doing more and more research and unfortunately haven't been able to source any 2nd firebricks, I even tried my local sugar mills as some suggested but unfortunately I couldn't get anything but I am wondering what you guys think of these bricks ??

I have contacted the guys who makes the bricks and he has offered me a good price and says that he has used the, before and they work fine as they are fired at 1160c
Just wanting any opinions you have

Will,
The first thing to consider is how long you will be at the address, the brick from Warwick will most likely last a lifetime so go for it. The other consideration for a short term low cost use would be cob

I am actually building the oven at my folks place and I don't see them moving anytime soon haha so now I am keen to get the Warwick bricks

A brick retailer in Bundaberg is selling Warwick solids to use for ovens at $2 ea. I expect that the price from the manufacturer will be a lot less.

Apparently these bricks have been used extensively here for ovens and he reckons they are fine for it.

I managed to find some used/stored new firebricks from Maryborough. If you are interested I can give you a number. Just PM me if you are interested.

I got recycled fire bricks from a guy on ebay. Got about 180 for $300. Bargain.

Its easier in the city
Im in the bush and dont have a trailer
So virtually impossible to grab a bargain that would also include hours of driving to and from.

Yes I did get your message and thanks for that, I will now have to start looking into the best and easiest source to acquire my bricks from. Hopefully I will be able to start my build in January sometime.
