Looking at putting a wooden slab across the landing. Bought this piece of cypress which is about 2m x 50cm x 6cm.

Nice slab, what would you coat it with to protect it? I am not real familiar with Cypress Pine(?) but the Macracarpa pine that is cut into slabs around here for outdoor furniture goes grey if the varnish / polyurethane gets any scratches or wears off - maybe an oil finish is more durable.

It would get a bit of radiant heat at the front of the oven - if I am understanding "across the landing" correctly

Thanks Steady. I was thinking of oiling it with some outdoor decking oil. Apparently it may go a bit yellower in the sun.
Across the landing is correct. From the left dude of the concrete slab across the front of the oven entrance then to the right side of the slab.
It only gets to around 60 degrees max just in front of the entrance. I have had a piece of hardwood sitting there.

60 deg C is no hotter than something in the outback sun I guess - timber slabs look nice

                      Hi Drac

The oven and food looks good.

I have timber in front of my oven but I was a bit worried about heat and wear so I modified the timber to allow a piece of stainless steel to be folded and flush mounted. There are photos on page 7 of my build.

You can buy a 600mm square stainless from Bunnings.

But you're right, it doesn't get as hot as I thought it would.

I would be putting on a proper polyeurathene coating (not a weak one where you can wash the brush out with water) on that slab. With my bench you can take a roast out of the oven and put it straight on the bench and it doesn't leave a mark.

If you need any tools for the job (belt sander, router etc) let me know as I probably have whatever you need.

I love cooking with wine. Sometimes I even put it in the food.

Hi Sharkey. Saw your pics before. Looks like you did a small recess for the stainless. Do you think it was worth it? What polyurethane did you use?

                              Hi Drac

Sorry, I looked for the polyeurathane on the weekend but I think I must have used it all and don't have it any more.

Your timber bench looks good. You can always add the stainless steel later if it is getting too much wear.
