  • Chain Saw

    Well AZ'ers

I broke down and bought a chain saw since I am getting near the end of my 1/2 cord of mesquite. A Husky 445 with 18 inch bar. Cannot wait to get up near Globe to cut wood - with my permit of course! Lots of oak available that is for sure. Plus I can cut up all the dang logs that I have inherited over the last few years for the oven project.

    Yeah Haw!

Alright Chris - welcome to the club! I don't know if you have cut before but take that damn nose guard off first thing. They are on there to protect you from kick back but if you are felling trees, it can get you in a world of trouble. By the way, I envy you being able to get to mesquite - awesome wood (I have to buy it in bags).

and ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS take someone with you when cutting.....I don't want to sound like your momma or anything but a nice cut with a chainsaw kill you in minutes....
No, I don't take anyone with me......but I should....(I pray a lot instead) there, my two cents worth...

Neither did I until the time before last. I was dropping a tree and as I was stepping back the chain caught on the tree and the saw flew out of my hands about 10 - 15 foot straight up. Scared the hell out of me watching the thing come back to earth.

            Re: Chain Saw

I always take someone - accidents do happen and they can be pretty bad. Having grown up near a logging area, I knew several folks who had saw injuries. Me - I love cutting and play it safe - too much pizza to make and eat. Plus a good sharp chain is worth it's weight in fresh mozza!

Les: funny thing is I also buy mesquite charcoal as it does not have the bitter sap in it when I use it in my smoker. I am looking forward to having some oak though. Most folks do not realize that AZ is loaded with more than desert foliage (saguaro does not taste good - lol). And the nose guard will be off shortly - I hate them things.

smoke diem (cook for the day)

I was looking for an old post and ran across this. I was cutting last summer and killed the saw and let it drop - the chain was still spinning when it trashed a good pair of jeans. It freaked me out and I dropped my pants in a heartbeat - just a band aid was required

I hope that the added weight in the seat of your pants, wasn't the reason you dropped them?
