Poisonous Australian smoking woods?

I have just routed a rebate in a Murray Pine (Callitris gracilis syn C. preissii ) table top so I can insert a piece of granite and now have lots of nice fine shaving suitable for smoking.

AG1081 Slender Cypress-Pine - Department of Primary Industries

The timber is extremely resistant to borers due to its high oil content.

Does anyone have any info on the timber?
If its no good for smoking I can always use it just to start the fires with.

I just bought a load of the very scented Cyprus Pine decking, machined it down in size and edged 9 - 8 x 4' tables and 2 large cutting benches and I personally would not use it for smoking. Put the shavings in an old pair of stockings and hang them in your wardrobe, it'll keep the moths away. Being pine, and with the aromatic oils readily available, don't taint your food with it, stick to Hickory or some of the more common hardwoods, eg oak, etc.

Ive used RedGum for smoking and havent died, yet..

Well dried redgum would be OK as most of the flammable oils/resins have dried.
Many hardwoos are fine but pine and the aroumatic softwoods are to stay awqy from, eb Huon, Radiata, Cyprus etc

I used the cyprus pine shavings to start a fire in the oven today and it is now banned from going anywhere near the oven.

Everything tasted like cyprus pine even after it had all burnt off.

Ill be saving the shavings for lighting the heater in the house.

Better off having the remnants of the wood in the air than in the food.
It is a lovelly timber and has a very pleasant aroma, but wouldn't taste too good.

Write off SILKY OAK as well the stuffs real dangerous you should even wear a mask when sanding the stuff

I concur with Silky Oak.
I am cronically alergic to the wet sap, my face sells to almost close my eyes and I go into an itching spasm for almost 3 weeks when I get even slightly warm. Cut down a growing tree and get thelogs milled ---- forget it unless I want major problems.
The dry wood, no worries, can and do work with the timber.

PS I did get rid of a large silky oak in the front yard but ony suffered minor problems BUT I did satisfy the other half

until you have to work with it everyday ...the smell gets too you after a while but the weight off cyprus is a back killer
