  • Dough Mixer - Omcan/Globe

Has anyone had any experience with either the Omcan or Globe mixers? I am looking at the 20QT and see that the Omcan claims 1.5 HP whereas the Globe 0.5 HP. But the Omcan is advertised in some places as not suitable for heavy doughs. Go figure since it is rated 1 HP higher than other machines in it's class.

THey run 1500 to 2,000 Canadian. Pretty steep. Just want to make sure I do the right thing.

    Thx

    Re: Dough Mixer - Omcan/Globe

I work with a 20q globe mixer at my mom's house. When she was in pastry school (her 3rd major career, graduated last year and studied under the current reigning national pastry champions), all the students rushed to get the Globes each day, because they were the "good" ones and everyone's favorites. My mom liked it so much she decided she had to have one for home, too.

I haven't tried it for bread doughs, but we make 100+ gingerbread houses each year, and the dough is very stiff, at least as stiff as a bread dough. Probably a lot more stiff than a very wet bread dough. The Globe performs magnificently. I'm completely in love. The self-timer is especially nice: you can set it to beat for a certain number of minutes and it turns itself off at the end.

    No experience with Omcan.

The globe looks kind of Hobart-like:

Not a cheap piece of equipment. They don't show voltage/phase info on the motor: where is it made?
