The reef is not getting the respect it deserves from some quarters. It seems that running/ruining the coal quarry (Queensland) is the priority and the reef comes in a poor last.

Spelling - one day it will be defined as something we used before txt spk.

Here you go, it will be all over the news tomorrow, but maybe not on Murdoch controlled media. GBRMPA are the body whose charter is to protect the reef and manage.

This is the moderate reporting of today's decision. I found it sickening but that is my opinion given my experience of fishing and snorkeling on the reef I expect I could be considered biased.

This is where the people who are angry about 3 million cubic metres of dredge spoil being dumped on the reef gather. Me included.

Just saw the news item on the ABC. They say that it will be dumped in the conversation park 40 km from the nearest coral.
If it's any consolation, one of my favourite (there's that pesky letter "u" again) snapper drops is in the spoil grounds where the dredging spoil from the local harbour was dumped. It only takes ten or fifteen years for a dumping area to grow new vegetation...............

Problem is that by the time any kind of recovery commences another load will be dumped following the annual maintenance program.......

The dredging is an issue in itself but would have less impact if the spoil were dumped ashore.

Yes but that would cost more. Yet again economics before safety or common sense. On a similar note, how come ERA got the go ahead to mine uranium right in the middle of Kakadu National Park? Since their mine has been open there have been over 200 accidents, the latest spilling over a million litres of toxic radioactive waste because a holding tank corroded. The public are being asked to trust the developers but they're unable to come up with any guarantees, just bungles and accidents. It is the taxpayer who ends up paying for their pollution decades or perhaps generations later.

Bangor fire has flared up again - 4 days after it was listed as "controlled".
Middle son got called into Maccas at 05:00 to cook 400 Egg and Bacon McMuffins for the fire fighters' breakfasts. 33 dozen eggs - he's currently asleep on the lounge room floor under the air conditioner.

The fire is now in Beetaloo Valley, a nice little valley that is home to lots of small acreage "tree changers". Unfortunately a lot of them tend to build their homes right in amongst the trees.

Oldest son's girl friend has a sister who got one of those calls last night that you never want to hear. "We are going to do a burn over, I'll call when its over."

It means they pull up in the fire truck, turn on the sprays and pray the fire runs over them before they run out of water.
It's a technique they use when they can't outrun the fire.
They made it.

Doesn't look good. On the other hand, if the board was staffed only by Greenpeace, you wouldn't be allowed to drive so much as a dinghy anywhere near the reef.

True, but the Authority's charter is to protect the reef and manage its use. They have not listened to the science that was presented or considered the other (more costly) options. All the marine scientists from the Aust.Institute of Marine Science and James Cook Uni are gob smacked at the decision. There was a submission signed by 240 scientists against the proposal.
