  • Weaving?

So we've had bee-keeping, keeping ducks and/or sheep, brewing, mead making, gardening, mosics and even carving rocking horses - is anyone out there interested in weaving by any chance?

I got my daughter one of those dinky little children's looms for her birthday, and then found I just couldn't keep my hands off it... so now, a mere couple of weeks later I find myself the proud owner of one rigid heddle loom (a Kromski Harp in case you were wondering) and one hand woven scarf, with a second one already on the loom.

    I think I caught a new bug.

On the upside, a scarf weighs a bit less than an oven and takes up less room, so I'll be able to make more than one of them... on the downside you can only do stripes, no twirly bits.

Yes, but you can WEAR them! Mosaics are lovely but they're a little clinky and don't drape well...

The color of the scarf is just gorgeous. I've done some weaving a long time ago, but on a little hand-made loom, not a bigger one. Now you can scour the stores for interesting yarns and such! Europe does have some really lovely knitting yarns, some of which could be used on a loom, I expect. I go through periods of furious knitting bug every year- socks, gloves, hats, sweaters. Every night I'm knitting away... and then I don't knit anything for months!

I know some weaving fans who make purses, etc. out of their material. Some of the things really look good. The projects are only limited by how long you want to work a pattern!

      Frances,
I doesn't surprise me that you are into weaving because your wood-fired oven looks woven! Great job.....you need to google Karen Allen, an American actress that started her own line of woven scarves, etc....yours are just as pretty as hers! You are such a talented person.

It took me 5 years to knit an afghan.....I kept getting lost in the stitches and finally finished it with a jillion mistakes. I have crossed weaving off my list of "want to do".....its up there with sky diving and being in New Orleans during Mardi Gras.

But YOU keep up the good work....you have a real talent for it.

Oh sure, lot of things... metalwork, keeping a neat garden or house, keeping a neat anything really, loosing those last couple of klios (and the oven doesn't help), getting the children to school on time without loosing my temper, parallel parking the car first go.... and so on.

I can't spin yet either, but I have kind of gathered that it'll probably be the next step. And now, whatever my weaving turns out like, I'll always be able to say: Ah, but it does drape better than the oven. Love it!

Here's another pic of my second scarf with the third on the loom, and some random accessoires - in accordance with a new fashion I've been noticing in the forum lately...

                Harhar... no idea...

Actually its all a matter of priorities. Clean the house, mow the lawn? Low low priority. Eat pizza, drink wine, smell the roses, do mosaics? High priority. We have a chaotic household and a wild garden, and I'm sure the kids must be embarassed sometimes (Swiss people have very tidy houses) - but

                a) kids are going to be embarassed by their parents anyway, and
                b) I'm sure the memory of home baked bread, oven building and a Mom who keeps on lerning new skills and doing things she enjoys will be more valuable in the long run.

They'll probably all end up as neat freaks...

Oh, and I haven't actually done any mosaics since I got the loom...
