Ken, this continues to look great. You did a wonderful build and it's just unfortunate you had to cover the intricate brickwork on that great dome!!

Very nice, Ken! Do you have to cut them at all? Looks kinda fun. You don't need metal lath on there?

Very little cutting. The product comes in two types: "flats" and "corners". Only one flat piece needs to be cut per course. You butter them and slap 'em on. They cut much easier than bricks.

The manufacturer says that as long as you apply to fresh laid concrete block or other masonry product, you don't need lath. Just type-S mortar mix.

As can be seen from my picture, any idiot can do it and it comes out looking good!

That stone you're using looks really good - it's going to be beautiful when it's done! Looks like that won't be too much longer, either ...

            Ken,
What was your source for the stone? Is it a brickyard product, or a Home Depot/Lowes product?

It's looking great -- the different materials are all coming together very nicely. :-)

Thanks for the nice compliment James. The product is called Mountain Stone. It's actually a concrete product. Here's the dealer map: Mountain Stone Products. It looks like it's a eastern/southeastern US product, but I'm sure similar stuff is available in other areas.

I ordered it at our local "Lee Brick and Block". Our Home Depot has it available as a special order item. I bought it from a brick yard since they had more experience with it and could help me estimate quantities and provide reliable advice.

If anyone is interested in a similar finish, try a local brickyard with a showroom. They will have a wide variety of styles and samples.

                OOOOHHHH

                So nice my friend.

Dave is completely jealous at this point.

I can't wait to see it finished.
And to think.. I'm just doing some stucco.

I better not show my wife any pics of yours!

                Excellent!

                  Thanks Dwats!

The thing I hate about this forum is I see all these fantastic ideas... I always kick myself and say: "ohhhh, I shoulda done it like THAT guy or gal!"

Same here ... you should really be allowed to build ten ovens, then you could go for all the styles you like!

Is the veneer going all over the oven, or are you planning something else for the house bit? Looks very nice!

Yeah... I'm sort of hoping one of my kids grows up and decides he or she wants an oven. Then I can be a contractor/supervisor and build the perfect oven like SpringJim!

The veneer will go up halfway (to the cantilever). Then it will be stucco colored to match the cream siding on our house (or whatever other color the boss says).

                        Ken

Did you buy the amount of veneer to exactly cover the sq footage of your stand, or did you over estimate? Just trying to get an idea for when I have to go get some soon. Thanks.

                            Sorry I missed this post!

I took the square footage and some drawings to the brick store and they helped me estimate how many boxes of flats and corners to buy (I ended up buying 5 boxes of flats and 2 boxes of corners. As it turns out, that was a hair over, so I went ahead and did the front face of the cantilever and went up 2 extra rows. I really like how it turned out.

Stonework is now complete. Ready to stucco! I'm really happy with how it turned out. I had a few extra pieces so I did the cantilever and above the oven door.
