The roof joists are screwed into the wall joists. I fastened metal roofing material under the soffets to close everything up. There's no way to keep the bugs and bees out, I'm not too worried about them. I don't have any gaps or holes large enough for birds.

Thanks Ken, I appreciate the info. I'm going to have to look around for the KDAT...not sure we have that here.
    Cheers

    Hi Gene,

All the wood is pressure treated pine. I used Kiln Dried After Treatment (KDAT) wood which is a little more pricy but I was able to put on the finish prior to construction. For the finish I used Sikkens Cetol Deck. It's holding up great.

    Good luck with your project!!

    Hi Ken,
If I read your image dates correctly, this should be your third summer with the pergola up. I am building one along side my wfo as well, and was wondering what type of wood you used for your beams and lattice work (the posts look like pressure treated lumber)? Also, how has the wood held up?
    Thanks,
    gene

Wow Ken - that was pulled out of the vault. I'm waiting for someone to ask Paul a question. Any chance of you flying out west for the open house?

Sure! It's Sikkens Cetol DEK finish:

It's a bit pricey but leaves a nice, furniture-like finish.

Thanks guys. I really couldn't have done this (or even started) without the help of this community!

Uhhmm, well... I need to put some little trim pieces on the 6x6's where they go into the counter tops. And we will ALWAYS be collecting decorations on our travels to adorn the walls with.

Nice work, Ken. Your oven was the one that inspired me to believe I could do this. I even followed your tried and true string method to good results. I curved and cantilevered a landing and am framing a gabled house. I appreciate your example.
