  • Oven dome will not go white

I can't seem to get the oven dome white even after nice fire that has been going for over an hour? Does anyone know what I am doing wrong??

    Thank you

I saw your finished oven pic in another thread from a couple of months ago. You gave us no info about insulation or venting when you had trouble bringing your oven up to temp.
Perhaps you can tell us more about your oven? How big is your fire?

Re: Oven dome will not go white

We built the dome with fire bricks then put some insulation, concrete then stucco. The Is the vent at the front of the oven that seems to be working fine.

My oven is not that big so the fires are not huge but they are not small either and do go on for awhile.

      Thank you for your help

Does the top of the dome turn white, at least?

Seems like a couple spots were trying to but it was kind of hard to see?

You might be losing too much heat. Do you have photos of your build where we can see the entry and placement of the vent?

                Please do post photos here.

I'm assuming your oven is completely dry and you're building a big enough fire using dry wood.

Also, in looking at your oven photo posted in the link below where exactly is the vent located in relation to the chimney stack. The chimney looks like it's set back?

It looks like it is in the middle of the oven.

If your chimney and vent are in the middle of the oven (as it appears in the photo), you have your answer. I can't see how any oven with a central vent/chimney could ever burn white, you are losing all of your heat up the chimney.
You might want to download the FB Pompeii plans and see how it should be built. For your sake, I hope that photo is deceiving; if that vent and chimney are in the middle I am afraid you will always have performance issues.

The photo is deceiving, the Chimney is at the front of the oven. (I will show better pictures tomorrow). I don't understand what you mean about the vent.

                      Sorry for all the questions.

Chimney and vent are the same thing.

This picture, if it's the one in question:

Did make it look like the vent wasn't over the oven entry. As you say, looks can be deceiving. I suspect wet oven/undersize fires, if it's properly insulated, over and under.

By vent, I meant the smoke chamber. It appears to be located in front and above the inner entry as it should be.
But that photo is sure deceiving. That chimney looks like it's sticking out the middle of the dome. A side or 3/4 shot of the oven would be nice...

Thats the picture. I believe there was one layer of insulation between the dome and the concrete.
