I went to Italy with my father about 15 years ago and it was there that I remember seeing my first 'forno a legna' or WFO....it was in the kitchen of my dad's cousin and it was a marvel to look at... although they had a modern oven and stove, the WFO was what they used most.....the smells and aroma eminating from that kitchen....and the fresh cooked bread...out of this world!!!!!!!
I think that was the moment!!!!

It has taken many years and many things have changed but I have come to the point where I want to experience it again....and again......and again!!!!!!!
and so like many of you my journey begins.......

This is why I built mine, and building another one now. I remember as a kid, my mom used to ask me to fire up the clay/brick oven outside behind the kitchen, almost every day, and she used that oven not only for bread, but also for cooking meet and vegetables. So, When I had the opportunity I decided to build one.

You will enjoy this experience, please post photos whenever you can.

this truly is the beginning....I am just trying to source all the material first with a projected construction date of May 2011(yeah it takes a while for the ground to thaw up here...LOL) . I have decided on the design and have already began to stockpile some concrete block for the foundation. Thanks to Jurrasicjockey for providing me with some firebrick and some insight into construction. I can't wait ....the anticipation is killing me!!

For materials check these out:
1. Firebrick, masonary products, clay flue pipe, brick sand, sand/gravel mix, vermiculite -> Bernardi Building Supply

2. Insulating hearth fibreboard and insulating blanket - Alphatherm Inc (Ask for Elvis as he has helped many a WFO builder and can get you the proper products. I used KFAC-19 under my hearth)

thanks for the information.....I will get in contact with Bernardi for the material.....I actually found some material at MASONS MASONRY.....they carry the fireproof mortar and firebrick as well.

Yup. I have bought from Mason's before as well. But this past summer my dad decided to build an oven and so I did some digging and Bernardi's prices were good. Still went to Mason's for the exterior bricks for the facade.

is it better to go with the homebrew mixture or the pre-mixed mortar for alphatherm???

I've used both. Actually come to think of it, I used the pre-mixed from alphatherm and buttered the inside edge of the bricks for the dome and then used homebrew to fill in the gaps in the back side because those gaps are wider and the pre-mix is pretty expensive. Worked OK for me. Just make sure you get the air dried pre-mix not the heat set kind. If memory serves me the air dried stuff is not water soluable when dry. Not that you'd be getting any water in the oven when done, but more peace of mind.
