  • Mold Release

Hello-I have found lots of good information on this forum. I am currently in the middle of my oven/outdoor kitchen project. I am getting ready to cast my oven from homebrew refractory. I have gotten good info from David S on this subject. What I need to know is-what can I use for a release agent between my mold and the refractory cement? Will Vaseline(petroleum jelly) work? Or will this effect my cooking from the residue left behind, or effect the refractory cement? Your advice is valued. Thank you.

Check with IronPony, he did a top notch castable WFO.

I use 50/50 motor oil and kerosene, I find it works pretty well. You don't want any more oil than is necessary and by thinning it down this way it can be painted on sparingly.

Thanks David-Would vegetable oil work in a pinch?

I guess any oil would work. Whatever you use will burn away in the oven.

Check with your local masonry supplier. You can buy a standard form release agent.

Just cover the mold in Cling Wrap.
