There's my project sketches in the first post of this thread. Wow, just noticed that was December 2011 !!! Another year wait isn't big considering the wait so far! http://www.fornobravo.com/forum/f6/h...-nz-15172.html

Good on you to be brave however I'm waiting until it's finalised. Main reason is the WFO is the justification for a whole new outdoor area with masonary walls, paving etc. Big job & likely about $7k of expense. I don't want to risk building it then the centre piece becomes redundant

This way they allow all outdoor cooking by one simple rule and then can deal with individuals who cause excessive smoke or create high fire risk via various other rules.
The remaining risk now to any pizza oven builder is it's still the 'proposed plan' but has been effective since 28th February 2015. Public submissions being sort with public hearings later in 2015. There's a small chance if build one now that there could be objections to proposed plan during this year and the proposed changes don't become permanent in 2016
Forge ahead! Far better to ask forgiveness than seek permission. If the proposed plan doesn't stick, then your oddly-shaped BBQ/ceremonial religious shrine will still turn out some fabulous pizza... by happy coincidence.

That is good news for pizza oven makers in NZ. Good to see authorities applying some common sense to such things. Must be a pizza lover in the ranks!!

Thanks. Can get similar here but 3 to 10 times the price ! Gas fired pizza oven
I've realised they're effectively pretty much same as hooded BBQ with stone/plate, except have a door rather than opening the hood.

This is perhaps a small step up from the plate we use Bakerstone Pizza Oven Box | Pizza Ovens - Gas | BBQs Direct

We do gather around the gas BBQ so socially it wouldn't change much once friends are there. But I do think they'd be more likely to come often if there's a fire to play with & to sit around after eating. Seems more & more it's not a happening thing........unless I move house into rural zoned area

Without the fire it may as well be a gas/electric oven in the kitchen. I agree that it is all about the rituals and the fire and the smoke, gathering wood and learning the skills needed to use the oven to potential.

Not sure that I have ever seen a group of people sitting around a gas kitchen range having a beer watching someone mess with the oven, watching the food cook and enjoying the camaraderie of it all.

Did I mention the fire, the flickering flames - we all have a little boy playing with fire hidden deep inside somewhere.

Re: Won't be starting - Pizza ovens banned by local council

I do want a WFO but can't have one :-( Council would find out about any type of solid fuel burning so it's not even worth considering the rocket oven or other variants. Would just take 1 neighbour to report it. Fines are fairly large plus they would force demolition of the oven.

I am truly surprised how effective the terracotta plate is. It's about 15mm thick & is glazed. Made in France. Can't recall brand. Works much much better than when we used to use 30mm granite in electric oven on maximum temperature heat soaking for 1hr or more. We put the plate in hooded gas BBQ & on max for minimum 20mins, typically 30mins before cooking anything. By then the plate is well heat saturated & hood thermometer showing about 300degC. Takes about 5mins to cook & get really crispy bases, however a bit more heat from above would be good with some toppings.

If there's a decent plan somewhere for fitting a gas burner to a brick oven I'd still consider doing it, but not willing to spend $1500 for kit & materials on a hunch that it might work (plus another $3000-$5000 for outdoor area walls, paving, bench, etc). With uncertain performance unsure it's worth the time & money cost to get the social & food rewards.

I still want a WFO its not just about making pizzas, its about everything else too.
The theatre and the long cooks and burning wood and making something with your own hands and the smell of smoke.

    G'day
That's interesting, cause before settling in my current house nearly 16 years ago, I lived in Sydney and the house oven was a gas cook top and a fan forced electric oven. That was pretty much the standard for housing in Sydney at that time. A 3mm thick baking tray was the "pizza stone " the thermal mass" and me and the kids cooked a pretty good pizza.
My boys still come around and we enjoy cooking pizza with them and there friends. That's what it's all about .... Seriously .. Good food
If you don't want a wood fired pizza oven... Fair enough. I love cooking for my friends and all welcome... That what its about.
    Regards dave
