    Re: Newbie homemade oven project...

Was getting ready with my pour, probably put 14 hours of research on this site, and then i saw win bottles...and now im thinking how cool it would be if i told people my hearth was filled with drunkeness. It sounds like it would be strong enough and use air for insulation, but i havent seen anyone else do this yet. Would like to hear an opinion cause i have a wife that likes wine

At least you have insulation, itll be interesting to see how the oven performs heat wise.

What is your ratio of portland/perlite? I personally think you are fine with what you have. Best option? No. Will it work? Yes.

probably close to 50/50?? I didn't measure, I just poured it in a 5 gallon bucket and mixed it up.

Well, that's a bit rich for an insulating mix...but it will work. I'm curious as to the performance of the bottle/perlcrete comb as an insulator. I suspect because of the slab, your floor will lose heat relatively quickly compared to the dome.

I'm not sure if it is that big a deal though.

                What influences the design changes?
Is it new and better ideas or newly found a materials.?
I'm not adverse to changing my mind but I usually have a plan to start with

There won't be anything you can do about it unless you start over at this point, so it is what it is.

PBR does strange things to the thought process. Looking forward with interest on your build.

                                Poohbair,
I've seen ovens on the internet that have used drums, but I'm concerned about what was previously in the drum, whether the drum is galvanized, the paint, etc. I would not want to be around the fumes coming from burning a fire in this drum. If you're considering going this route, I'd suggest using the drum around which you can create a form from different materials.

On second thought, why don't you just download the Pompeii plans and use them? While I've laid tons of concrete blocks when I was a kid helping my brother build a barn and my father building a garage, that was decades ago. I've never laid a brick before and I'm well on my way now with my oven. There are hundreds of skilled folks on this forum to help you with that.
