  • Steel oven stand/ hearth construction

I am planning a build for this spring/summer.
I want to build a steel stand instead of masonry block.

I plan on using fiberglass insulation board to set the oven floor on.

I am wondering if it is recommended to pour a concrete slab on top of the steel frame? If so how thick?

or is there another type of surface/material one could use in this construction method?

    G'day
As long as you put enough supports across it ( angle is strongest) you should find that 1/2 in compressed cement sheet should do the job.

      Thanks Dave

Is that the same product as hardi-backer or a concrete tile underlayment sheet or something different than that?

        G'day
I've just visited James hardy US to find out and the sites a bit low on the detail. Compressed cement sheet is a floor material comes in 15 mm 18mm and 24mm. It's used in bathrooms and kitchens and external verandahs and tiled over. Max between joist centres is usually 300mm or 12 ins. I know it will support an oven as I've seem one that was built to be moved as the owner rented.

"hardi-backer" That's the stuff. No need at all for a poured base unless you want to make it a vermiculite or perlite mix for insulation purposes. I would go with the ceramic insulation board just because I don't know anything about the fiberglass ones your talking about. I used some thin perforated steel sheet for my "floor", but if I did it again I would use the hardi-backer just like you're planning.

Is the ceramic insulation board what Forno sells?

or is it something different? Do you have a brand name or where would I go to purchase this?

Yes that is the stuff that they sell. I personally used 3 inches of Insblock 19 under my floor and it has performed quite well.

Re: Steel oven stand/ hearth construction

I also will be building a 42" Pompeii and need to be able to move it if necessary. I plan on pouring a reinforced slab then build a steel base enclosed with cement board. I want to build it with square steel tube but need some engineering help in choosing the correct gage of material. Any one done this and could help?

This is will be my second oven so I am confident about everything except the stand. Thanks!
