Is the only reason to clean a chimney bc of fires? Do I need to clean my metal chimney?

I never clean mine, but maybe I should. If you hit the side of the pipe with a stick it will shower down some soot. My mobile oven has a removable flue pipe and some soot falls out of it occasionally when placing or removing it. If you have a brick chimney cleaning it would be more difficult.
