Log splitter accident

I got sloppy with the new log splitter for just one instant after splitting for more than 5 hours. The log caught my palm and ripped it up good. Then the doc at one of those "doc in a box" place did a crappy job of sewing, so a full two weeks later, another doc sliced it open and sewed it up right. My good hand too. Now, I can't do anything for a couple more weeks. Typing is quite a chore.

Lesson learned: pay attention all the time.

It takes a bigger man than most to admit making a mistake that leads to an injury, albeit one of the most important body parts. Thanks for alerting us to the importance of safety and paying attention.

Its a miracle we make it to adulthood. I should be maimed or dead many times over, but don't feel secure enough in my manhood to tell all here

I will say though that my right hand is still mostly numb after a 'specialist' operated on the nerve in my right cubital tunnel (elbow's crazy bone)....and that was ten years ago.

my log splitter requires both hands to operate it but without a third hand to hold the log, I lift up my knee to hold down one of the handles and carefully control the hydraulic ram with the left hand and very carefully hold the log with my right.
We often need a reality check just to keep us in line but I sympathise with your situation.
Quak doctors should be stricken from the list.
I had one in a large public hospital when I cut throught my lh thumb nail with a friction saw and after coming out of the op pulled off the plaster cast which was strangualting the ever swelling thumb. I also had to remove the stainless pin inserted to hold the bone fragment in place but he had no idea how to grip the ceramic sphere on the end wit a pair of pointy nosed pliers that he had in hand.

Glad to hear there was no loss of appendages. I most certainly can relate. My wife is amazed that I still have all of my didgets after 30 yrs of being a power tool junky, while many times not following proper safety protocals (or experimenting trying to find a new use).
As for log splitting, lucky with the axe, but have been hit it the shins a couple of times by flying wood with the hydraulic (its really not as harmless as it looks).

Familiarity breeds inattentiveness and poor decisions.. we all do it.

My grandfather was chainsawing and the chain broke.. came across his face between his eyes and down the side of his nose.

I was scared just watching that video. Funny how the "guard design" didn't contemplate the axe head coming loose and flying towards his head after several cords...

ThermoJax, thanks for your heads-up. At least your hand injury came from something productive, I hurt my hand punching a bus that was cutting me off and scraping my side mirror (the way people drive down here is another story).

However, 5 hours seems a long time to be a-splittin'.... I hope all ends well.
