  • attaching flue to the vent

    Hi all,
    I made much progress recently.

I am at this stage now:
chimney 005 on Flickr - Photo Sharing!

I am not sure how to attach the flue - just use the same homebrew high heat mortar? I read somewhere here that people use some high temp caulk or silicone.

Timo, if you are here, how did you attach you flue on this picture?

I am also planning to build some bricks around it, not sure how many high yet.

    thanks!

Re: attaching flue to the vent

I would recommend framing around the base of the flue with fire brick mortared in place. The only mortar I would use around the flue is what is needed to fill the gaps at the corners. The cast clay expands differentially from the firebrick and mortar so if you try to glue it in place with refractory mortar the joint will just crack and degrade. Whereas if you let gravity hold it down in place and a ring of well seated firebrick to lock it in side to side and front to back it will hold up and perform better.

Thanks! I was not sure what to do and i did mortar around it, I wish you responded earlier - your advice makes perfect sense. Well, I will fire it up this weekend and see what cracks.
      Thanks again!

If you brick around it you will be just fine.
